Seven Great Citizen Science Projects

=

Many scientific advancements in prior centuries can be attributed to a single individual or, at most, two to three people that have either independently or jointly innovated. However, advances in technology, global communications and social interactions have meant that the 21st century will be recognized as the century where mass collaboration changes the paradigm.
external image Foldit.pngCitizen Science has become more of a differentiator as scientists are now turning to crowdsourcing to engage large communities of home scientists to help process vast amounts of data and to draw accurate conclusions from scientific research.

A Huge Leap Forward for Open Science

=

This week’s news that researchers at
Cern
(European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Switzerland are publishing their results “so other scientists can determine if the approach contains any mistakes” represents a huge leap forward for Open Science.
The science community is traditionally a “closed” community, probably at the insistence of the large pharmaceutical organizations who insist on this as a method of protecting the intellectual property rights on any research they fund. While there have been
moves
within the science community to share research online as a means of “crowdsourcing” the work and speeding up discovery, science seems to be way behind other disciplines in actually getting the information out there.
While it makes perfect sense to many researchers to open up research projects for collaboration, the companies that sponsor and fund research laboratories worldwide are keen to keep the lid on research results and new developments due to the immense amounts of money to be made from new drugs, medical procedures and technological/industrial applications.

Roche, the world leading pharmaceuticals and diagnostics company, has established a strategic partnership with Swedish Uppsala BIO's open innovation program, BIO-X, expanding its network of more than 80 independent partners that complement its pharmaceutical R&D capabilities.
Roche has a long history of open innovation. Since 1999, the company has been running a global innovation program based on umbrella agreements with key partners. The cooperation agreement announced this Thursday, 15 September, 2011, is the first in Europe and will link the Bio-X's researchers with the Roche's global innovation network at least for three-years.
The Uppsala BIO open innovation program is a government-funded initiative that aims to promote R&D and link science sector to industry. BIO-X identifies and supports ideas in the research community that can satisfy unmet medical needs or solve problems in healthcare, drug development, and diagnostics.

TheSkyNet will use the power of the crowd on its star trek

=

When the unforgettable James T. Kirk, captain of the starship USS Enterprise, recorded his last Captain’s Log, on StarDate 9525.1 it included an optimistic forecast:
“This ship, and her history, will shortly become the care of another crew. To them, and their posterity will we commit our future. They will continue the voyages we have begun, and journey to all the undiscovered countries, boldly going where no man, ... where no one has gone before."
Today, Tuesday 13 September, in Australia, 42 years after the final episode of the original Star Trek, a community computing science initiative was kicked-off to help discover the hidden Universe; it was officially launched in Curtin University. TheSkyNet project is a citizen science initiative that will be powered by members of the public contributing their spare computing power to the processing of radio astronomy data.

FundaGeek: Crowdfunding for Technical Innovation and Basic Research

=

Many excellent technical ideas never become a reality because the odds of obtaining funding from a traditional Angel investor, venture capitalist or lending institution are like hitting the lottery. Going to “friends and family” as sources of seed funding may not be an option for you, and maxing out your credit cards is just a bad idea. So what other options are available?
FundaGeek
is a crowdfunding resource created expressly for technical innovation — we focus on commercial projects based on technology, as well as basic research projects at universities and research institutions. Our site differs from crowdfunding platforms that center on creative projects like music, art and film; at FundaGeek, science and technology reign supreme.

Luis von Ahn wants to translate the web — all of it. To call him ambitious is an understatement. In a TED Talk that was originally uploaded to YouTube in April 2011, von Ahn introduced Duolingo, a crowdsourced translation project, and boldly proclaimed that with one million users, the site could help to convert the entirety of Wikipedia into Spanish in 80 hours. Free of charge. Even with a slightly more modest prediction of 100,000 users, the task would be completed within five weeks. What von Ahn, an entrepreneur and computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was proposing, and what Duolingo is now beginning to offer in a private beta, is a crowdsourced translation service that provides every volunteer with a service of their own. What he envisions is a tool that will not just revolutionize the Internet, but education itself.
